Purple Swamphen, In Bangla: Beguni Kalem (বেগুনি কালেম)

Purple Swamphen is a critically endangered birds’ species in Bangladesh. The scientific name of the bird is Porphyrio Porphyrio. Among 13 subspecies, Porphyrio Porphyrio poliocephalus has seen in Bangladesh. This year only 280 population of this birds have seen at the haor areas where its common habitat. Mainly this bird exists in the haor Basin of Bangladesh, locally called Tanguar haor, Hail haor, Hakaluki haor. Haor is a very big Marshy Lake where water rise in the rainy season and water lessen in winter. The people catch the birds for food or make to pet. The value of a bird is 3 dollar in Bangladesh. The villagers prey the birds and sell them illegally but the authority, Forest Department of Bangladesh, doesn’t take actions against the birds hunter.
